The Daedalus Quartet will perform the third string quartet composed by MIT Senior Lecturer Charles Shadle. The quartet will also perform Beethoven's String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat major, Op. 74 (composed in 1809) and Dvorak's String Quartet No. 11 in C major, Op. 61 (composed in 1881). Mr. Shadle's quartet was recently commissioned and premiered at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival.
The Daedalus Quartet members will also coach MIT students in the Chamber Music Society. The quartet's visit to MIT is sponsored by the Music and Theater Arts Section.
Praised by The New Yorker as "a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets," the Daedalus Quartet has received plaudits from critics and listeners alike for the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances.
The award-winning members of the Daedalus Quartet hold degrees from the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute, Cleveland Institute, and Harvard University. Brother and sister violinists Kyu-Young Kim and Min-Young Kim, who alternate on first violin and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan grew up in East Patchogue, Long Island; they met violist Jessica Thompson, a Minneapolis native, at the Marlboro Festival.
For this performance, Kyu-Young Kim, who is on paternity leave, will be replaced by Ayano Ninomiya, second-prize winner of the 2003 Walter W. Naumburg International Violin Competition. |
